A look into the role…  

We are recruiting a Business Intelligence Data Engineer to join our Information Services team and help shape the future of Data & Analytics across our Group. 

You'll play a key role in designing and developing scalable data solutions, building robust ETL pipelines, and creating meaningful insights that support business decision-making. Working across multiple business areas, you'll have the opportunity to modernise analytics capabilities and deliver high-impact solutions that create real value. 

This role would suit someone with strong analytical skills, a passion for data, and the ability to translate complex information into clear business insights. 

Experience with Python (PySpark) and/or Databricks would be particularly advantageous. 

 

The Business Intelligence Data Engineer will: 

  • Design, develop and optimise ETL pipelines and data integrations. 
  • Build and maintain data models that support reporting and analytics. 
  • Create engaging dashboards and data visualisations. 
  • Improve database performance, scalability and data quality. 
  • Partner with stakeholders to understand reporting and analytics requirements. 

 

Implement Efficient ETL Processes That Support Business Needs 

  • Develop and maintain ETL processes that bring data from multiple sources into our data platform. 
  • Optimise existing data pipelines for performance and reliability. 
  • Design robust data architecture solutions that support evolving business requirements. 
  • Promote consistent, high-quality data and a "single version of the truth" across the organisation. 

 

Design and Implement Data Models for Business Intelligence Reporting and Analytics 

  • Create dimensional data models to support reporting and self-service analytics. 
  • Enhance analytics capabilities that enable faster, more informed decision-making. 
  • Ensure data integrity, quality and accuracy across reporting solutions. 
  • Support secure access to business-critical data. 

 

Create Intuitive and Interactive Data Visualisations 

  • Design and develop interactive dashboards and reports that deliver actionable insights. 
  • Apply data visualisation best practices to create engaging user experiences. 
  • Incorporate drill-downs, filters and interactive features for deeper analysis. 
  • Identify opportunities for predictive analytics and scenario modelling. 

 

Optimise Database Performance, Query Execution and Data Processing 

  • Analyse and improve SQL queries, indexing strategies and database performance. 
  • Support scalable solutions capable of handling increasing data volumes. 
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and resolve performance issues. 
  • Explore opportunities to automate processes and improve efficiency. 

 

Skills for Success 

 To be considered, you'll need: 

  • At least 2 years' experience in a Data Engineering, BI Engineering or similar role. 
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases. 
  • Experience in working with & supporting modern cloud data platforms e.g. Snowflake, Databricks, Fabric 
  • Experience of data warehousing, data modelling and big data concepts. 
  • Experience with BI tools such as Qlik, Tableau or Power BI. 

You'll also bring: 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills. 
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. 
  • A collaborative approach and desire to work as part of a high-performing team. 
  • A passion for using data to drive business value and informed decision-making. 

It would be great if you also have: 

  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline. 
  • Experience with Python, PySpark, Databricks or modern cloud data platforms. 
  • Experience building ETL solutions, APIs and data integrations. 
  • Experience with Power BI, Tableau, QlikView or Qlik Sense. 
  • Experience improving data quality and governance. 
  • Retail sector experience.

This is a full-time position working 36.5 hours per week, with an early finish every Friday.
